Regular maintenance goes a long way in avoiding breakdowns and extending the life of your rotating machinery. But sometimes equipment fails. Often, bearing failure is the culprit. Precision ball bearings are designed to last a long time. Assuming the application is correct, for maximum longevity, the bearings must be installed correctly, lubricated and maintained.
When a bearing does fail, it is important to determine the exact cause to make the necessary adjustments for improved operation of your equipment. One example of how bearings can fail is if corrosion in a ball race leaves rust. Rust is an abrasive that can result in wear that then causes a loss of pre-load or an increase in radial clearance. If the bearing is grease lubricated, it will impede the lubrication process resulting in lubrication failure and over heating.
Some over heating symptoms are discoloration of the rings, balls, and cages and temperatures in excess of 400°F. The high temperatures can anneal the ring and ball materials, resulting in a loss of hardness that reduces the bearing capacity and resulting in early failure. Extreme cases can cause a deformity of the balls and rings. Thermal or overload controls, adequate heat paths, and supplemental cooling are all effective solutions for this problem.
- Passage of electric current through the bearing
- Improper mounting
- Incorrect shaft and housing fits
- Defective bearing seating on shafts and in housings
- Ineffective sealing
- Vibration while bearing is not rotating
- Inadequate lubrication
We routinely service all types of rotating and reciprocating machinery including bearing, pumps, compressors, turbines, expanders, engines, motors, generators, fans, blowers, gearboxes, seals, and more.
We have years of experience trouble shooting machinery and our highly trained technicians can perform a vibration troubleshooting effort that can include experimental modal analysis (EMA) to determine system natural frequencies, and operating deflection shape (ODS) characterization to observe system behavior under operational loading.
IER Services provides high quality electromechanical repairs, parts, and field services to many industries including energy, oil & gas, water & waste water, transportation, pulp & paper, HVAC, and more.
Our technicians are factory trained and fully certified. We are the only certified distributor for WEG Motors in the state of Ohio.
You can count on our technicians to diagnose your equipment correctly. Our repair process includes cutting or re-cutting gears to meet or exceed OEM specifications, rebuilding shafts or re-grounding them, and checking and/or replacing bearings, seals, and gaskets.
We do the job right the first time. We don't cut corners, but we do try to minimize your down time. We know that your equipment is only valuable when it is working for you not when it is broken or sitting in our shop. Our shop is fully stocked with parts and motors to keep your operation running smoothly.
IER Services (Industrial Electromechanical Repair Services) can provide fast, effective, repair services of electromechanical devices of all types. We offer alignment inspections and analysis, advanced tooling and machine installations for AC and DC motors, pumps, variable frequency drives, and more. We cover Central Ohio and surrounding areas.
