Regular maintenance goes a long way in avoiding breakdowns and extending the life of your rotating machinery. But sometimes equipment fails. Often, bearing failure is the culprit. Precision ball bearings are designed to last a long time. Assuming the application is correct, for maximum longevity, the bearings must be installed correctly, lubricated and maintained.

When a bearing does fail, it is important to determine the exact cause to make the necessary adjustments for improved operation of your equipment. One example of how bearings can fail is if corrosion in a ball race leaves rust. Rust is an abrasive that can result in wear that then causes a loss of pre-load or an increase in radial clearance. If the bearing is grease lubricated, it will impede the lubrication process resulting in lubrication failure and over heating.

Some over heating symptoms are discoloration of the rings, balls, and cages and temperatures in excess of 400°F. The high temperatures can anneal the ring and ball materials, resulting in a loss of hardness that reduces the bearing capacity and resulting in early failure.  Extreme cases can cause a deformity of the balls and rings. Thermal or overload controls, adequate heat paths, and supplemental cooling are all effective solutions for this problem.
