What is a Brushed Motor?
It is an electric motor usually has permanent magnets on the outside and a spinning armature on the inside. The permanent magnets are stationary, so they are called the stator. The armature rotates, so it is called the rotor. Around since the late 1800s, these motors are one of the simplest types of motor. They were the first commercially important application of electric power for driving mechanical energy.
When you run electricity into the electromagnet in the armature, it creates a magnetic field that attracts and repels the magnets in the stator. The armature spins through 180 degrees. The poles of the electromagnet need to be changed to keep it spinning. The change in polarity is handled by the brushes. They make contact with two spinning electrodes attached to the armature. As it spins, the magnetic polarity of the electromagnet is flipped.
The speed and torque can be changed to provide steady speed or speed inversely proportional to the mechanical load by changing the operating voltage or the strength of the magnetic field. (The controller provides pulses of current to the motor windings that control the speed and torque of the motor.)
Brushed motors continue to be used for electrical propulsion, cranes, paper machines and steel rolling mills. Should high torque be needed, brushed motors can fall short. As speed increases, brush friction increases and viable torque decreases.
The biggest problem with these motors is that they are notorious for burning out very fast. The brushes wear down and require replacement often. The best way to prolong the life of the motor is to clean it often. Other common problems with these motors are inadequate heat dissipation caused by the rotor limitations, high rotor inertia, low speed range due to limitations imposed by the brushes, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by brush arcing.
