A "C-Face" motor is a common American mechanical standard designed with a rugged flange on the face of the motor for mounting purposes. The weight of the motor is supported by the flange, which is most commonly attached to a gearbox. The flange is strong enough to cantilever the motor.
The NEMA C-Face mount incorporates a machined-face flange and a pilot on the end of the shaft to allow direct-coupling with equipment. Bolts pass from the mounting-face through threaded-holes in the motor. The C-face is the most readily available type other than a standard Welded Base.
Naturally, this method is not useful for large motors and is rarely used over 20 horsepower. C-Face motors are designed to very tight specifications and are designated by a "C" after the frame such as 56C or 143TC sizes. There are matching gearboxes readily available.
The usual applications for a C Faced Motor are:
- Machine tools
- Gear reducers
